Named Juanita at birth, JuanitaTortilla is this homemade artisan’s online handle from time immemorial.
Juanita’s happy place is in slow-crafting bespoke whimsies, repurposing found things, and exploring art avenues as a self-taught artist. She values wabi-sabi and beauty in imperfections. She is mindful of creating original one-off pieces or small-batched collections that make her heart smile.
JuanitaTortilla is a one-woman show since 2004.
Juanita’s background in Biology reveals itself in works featuring nature. For almost two decades Juanita has resided in the United States, Switzerland and Australia (not simultaneously, of course). Wherever her location, Juanita injects localness in her work and life and enjoys collaborating with kindreds.
Uprooting once again in 2020 at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, Juanita is now based in her home country Singapore and on a Fine Arts journey. She is determined to reconcile her slow-made and upcycling ethos in this bustling tropical island of sparse “old things.”
Incorporating printmaking techniques, Juanita features the globetrotting Pickle (2003 - 2023) — and sometimes Mia (age 8) — in her Pickled Pockets collection.

When not tending to JuanitaTortilla-related matters, Juanita is busy: introverting / drinking tea / not conforming to the norm / dressmaking / spending precious time with Mia and the geriatric Pickle / knitting or crocheting / connecting with creative souls / dreaming of a rural, quiet life in far-flung places with her husband / all of the above. Sometimes she even tidies up her workspace!
